Szepesi, Bence

Szepesi, Bence

Member of the orchestra since 1992, Bence also teaches and performs widely as a soloist and frequently acts as a judge at competitions. Music fills his days completely: he teaches in several institutions of education, at secondary and higher level. Among these the University of Miskolc stands out where he has taught classical saxophone for eight years. He is founder and artistic director of the world-renowned ensemble called Budapest Saxophone Quartet, of which he is proudest, besides Dohnányi Orchestra, of course. Established in 1995, the Budapest Saxophone Quartet is a one-of-a-kind small chamber orchestra in Hungary considering its lifetime, set-up, career path and membership, and a rare phenomenon internationally, as it still consists of the same four people who over twenty years ago set this group off to conquer the world, and established the classical saxophone genre that had been unheard of in Hungary before.

Bence plays regularly in the Hungarian State Opera Orchestra, which he enjoys profoundly.

For over ten years he has been member of the jury at Hungarian and international competitions, he has held clarinet and saxophone master courses in more than ten countries, at such distinguished universities like the Manhattan School of Music, New York, Los Angeles State University, Conservatory of Ljubljana, Slovenia and Conservatorio Nicolini, Piacenza, Italy, just to name a few. He has played solo with several foreign orchestras including the Russian State Wind Orchestra, St. Petersburg State Capella Symphony Orchestra, Russia, Intercamerata Orchestra, Poland, Arnhem Wind Symphony, the Netherlands and Dohnányi Orchestra.

On top of all that he is deeply involved in organisational work, too: he is the Chairman of the International Clarinet Association in Hungary and was elected President of the Hungarian Clarinet and Saxophone Society in 2016 which is the first national professional institution to unite clarinet and saxophone players, teachers, students and fans of these instruments in an official non-governmental organisation. His occupation, in fact, is both a profession and a hobby for him. He is most proud to be engaged in this wide range of versatile activities, and he is lucky to be able to do what he loves.

Favourite composers: Bach, Vivaldi and Mozart.

‘What does Dohnányi Orchestra mean to me? A uniquely colourful professional career, an exceptionally great community and an extraordinary opportunity for development. Dohnányi Orchestra is an unparalleled phenomenon in Hungary by being the only ensemble that was designed following the American model rather than classical traditions, by utilising versatility, breaking down barriers between genres and connecting different art forms. We musicians are also incredibly proud of the professional and business model that the orchestra established and has maintained successfully and outstandingly for many years under Gábor Hollerung’s leadership. Dohnányi Orchestra performs the greatest number of concerts in Hungary and what’s more we have a full house every time and everywhere. We are extremely proud of that! That’s why we call this orchestra home and that’s exactly why so many former members long to be with us again. Dohnányi Orchestra provides a career for musicians. I surely love playing and living here.

Upon our 2018 anniversary, I wish another 25 years spent with Gábor and my fellow musicians in such a good company, surrounded by friends and having such a fantastic audience in all our concerts. That’s what I wish for all of us.’

Kanyó, Dávid

Kanyó, Dávid

Dávid has been a member of our orchestra since 2003.

Although he has no official workplace outside BDO, he is a regular soloist or contributor of other Hungarian ensembles like Weiner-Szász Chamber Symphonic, Marcato Ensemble, the EAR Band, Sounds of Babel, the BonBon Matinee series, Budapest Saxophone Quartet. In addition he often organizes concerts himself. He also used to be a teacher and enjoyed it very much.

Dávid’s no. 1 favourite composer is J. S. Bach, and his no. 2 is W.A. Mozart. He is fond of lots of pieces of music but his most admired one is Goldberg Variations, BWV 988 (Bach).

Family ties are most important for Dávid: he feels lucky to be surrounded by – beyond his wife and daughter – a very cohesive extended family. Brought up by artist parents, fine arts have accompanied him just as closely as music from the very beginning. Even dance has entered his life, through his wife.

He was eight years old when his father became his teacher, and later he studied in the classes of Zoltán Gyöngyössy and István Matuz. Out of his numerous Hungarian and international achievements, he is especially proud of two choral competition victories, because his old choir mates are now amongst the best-recognized vocal performers in Hungary. Alongside playing instrumental music, he sometimes tries to develop his conductor’s skills (and has also been  category winner of international conductor competitions twice). He has also had the pleasure of conducting BDO several times.

He positions himself to be somewhat of a perfectionist who strives for accomplishment and excellence in all areas of life. He is hooked on travelling, hiking in nature, exercising, tinkering, listening to music and cooking.

This orchestra has a really inspiring milieu where I have always liked playing, from the very beginning. Gábor’s very strong personality and musical competence is the engine of Dohnányi Orchestra from day 1. Work with him requires constant readiness and flexibility for each of us without exception. Maybe this is how Dohnányi could become a varied and multicolour ensemble, able to switch freely between the different genres and styles like movie soundtracks, jazz, contemporary music, opera, musical and many more.’

‘When I joined the orchestra, at the age of 23, I did not expect myself to develop a real love relationship with not only the flute but also the piccolo. We regularly get the chance to work together with amazing guest conductors and soloists, thereby enhancing the accomplishment and quality standard of the orchestra. I am grateful for having been able to perform as a soloist or conductor with the orchestra several times. I hope to keep playing music with this superb team and I wish to get the chance to propagate classical music in a more peaceful and affectionate world. May we move year by year towards an easy and predictable environment to live and perform in. For the future, I dream of an unstoppably growing audience and our gradually discovering the significance and beauty of classical music.’

Bene, Hajnalka

Bene, Hajnalka

Hajnalka has been a member of our orchestra since 2002.

She does not particularly have a favourite composer but the world of late Romantic and Slavic music are close to her. She does not have a favourite piece; she is a happy consumer of all genres of music.

Her fiancé is a solid member of BDO’s cello section.

‘I like playing in BDO because of the conductor’s wands that tend to fly off unexpectedly and accidentally; I have dodged them pretty well so far. For our 25th anniversary (in 2018 – the ed.) I wish everyone a pencil in “purplish red”.’

Bánki, Berta

Kára-Sepsi, Etelka

Kára-Sepsi, Etelka

Etelka has been a member of our orchestra since 2006. Apart from BDO, she works for Kroó György Elementary Art Education Institute.

She was voted Musician of the Season 2014-15 by the members of the orchestra.

Her favourite composers: Bach, Mozart, Brahms. Her favourite piece: Symphony No. 1 by Brahms.

She got married in 2014 and has a son.

She grew up in a big family with 9 siblings. Her parents liked music very much. They did not have the chance to learn to play any instruments but did their best to make it possible for their children. In the end, only Etelka chose a career in music, at the time not really knowing whatever it meant. She got acquainted with orchestra work during her years at the Music Academy.

‘I like playing in the orchestra, and I truly enjoy the good atmosphere of the rehearsals and concerts. I learned what orchestra work really means in Dohnányi Orchestra, and from Gábor Hollerung. Upon our 2018 anniversary I wish at least 25 more years for the orchestra! Many nice concerts together, also good health, endurance and love for the work ahead for Gábor and all my colleagues!’

Lombos, Pál

Lombos, Pál

Member of our orchestra since 2004. He is the leader and contrabassist of the Swing á la Django, and the director and producer of the Heureka Music Agency.

His favourite composers: Beethoven, Mozart.

His favourite composition: Händel-Harvorsen: Passacaglia.

He is married, father of two children.

He likes mixing pop music with symphony orchestral sound. In the previous years as a producer he proved it with a lot of sold out, joint concerts of BDO and other Hungarian mainstream orchestras.

I love the atmosphere of the rehearsals, the collegiality, the professionalism of my colleagues, and their commitment to music. After the long process of rehearsals I love the excitement of the concert when we give our 120%, and we get an outstanding musical experience playing together.

In the last 14 years I and the orchestra have been growing up on the instructions and guidance of Gábor Hollerung, and I became a professional musician thanks to him and to this excellent orchestra.
Day by day, rehearsal by rehearsal I feel happier and luckier to have the possibility of working here. I wish us another two 25th anniversaries as beautiful as the current one.”
