Mozart: Jupiter Symphony

We dedicate this concert to the memory of Zsófia Tallér, an extremely talented composer who passed away at a young age after a long illness. Her oratorio “Exit into the Light” was written for the Day of the Dead and was originally dedicated by the composer to the memory of her parents. The work is a setting to music of the Egyptian Book of the Dead in the composer’s own translation and editing. The treatment of this grandiose and mystical theme almost freezes the listener in the chair.

In the second half of our concert, however, we will be already walking in the light. Wagner used to refer to Mozart as: Der Licht- und Liebesgenius (the Genius of Light and Love). His ‘Jupiter’ Symphony is like an act of taking into possession the impossible in the history of music. It is a work of splendour, exuberance and captivating musical construction, and at the end of the piece the composer even offers the listener the gift of a grand fugue.

Advent concert

With this concert, we would like to bring an intimate, loving, true Advent atmosphere into the lives of the kind members of our audience. To be performed are some popular melodies from the Baroque to the present day, all of them evoking the Advent season.

Tchaikovsky’s The Nutcracker has become an indispensable element of the programme for Advent and Christmas concerts, and tonight you can listen to the suite.
Karolju by American composer Christopher Rouse is a tribute to the Christmas carols of the nations.  The composer evokes the spirit of the festive season by weaving together Christmas melodies.
It was during Bach‘s first Christmas in Leipzig that the first performance of his Magnificat, his largest work to date, took place. The Magnificat, with its Latin text, tells the story of the Virgin Mary as presented by the Gospel of Luke, and the work’s connection to Christmas was reinforced by the inclusion of four Christmas carols in this version of it.

UNFORGETTABLE GALA EVENING

MEMORIA MELODIA – with the power of music for people living with dementia.

BDO will join in the World Alzheimer’s Month in September with a special event – not only as a participant, but also by inviting the orchestra’s patrons. The UNFORGETTABLE GALA EVENING was inspired by a documentary film about an elderly couple faithful to each other unto death. (The title is Hűség which translates to ‘Faithfulness’, the English title given by the makers of the film is: Ever; it was directed by Csaba Szekeres.) The film was released two years ago and since then it has had success at several national and international festivals. The film will be screened again free of charge from 16 September to 3 October 2021. Its creators have been collecting stories from relatives of people with dementia for 2 years. Those invited and present will have a chance to hear and see these stories during the UNFORGETTABLE GALA EVENING. And of course, BDO’s chamber orchestras will also do their best to make this evening even more unforgettable.

MEMORIA MELODIA at the UNFORGETTABLE GALA EVENING at Uránia National Film Theatre on 28 September 2021 at 19.00!

The event is free of charge but registration is required. You can register by clicking on this link.

MÜPA – DISCOVERIES

A concert in which everything and everyone is a discovery. Korngold’s music is hardly ever heard, even though he is an exciting composer. His suite Captain Blood is completely unknown to Hungarian music-lovers. The viola concerto by the internationally renowned composer of film music John Williams promises to be a thrilling adventure, no less so than Nielsen’s rarely performed Symphony No. 1 Another discovery will be the uniquely talented young Polish violist and the similarly youthful British conductor, who is joyfully increasing the ranks of females in her profession.

Captain Blood was actually a successful American film from 1935, with music written by Korngold, who had become a successful Hollywood film composer after emigrating from Europe. He was attempting to adapt this to the concert stage when he transformed it into a concert suite. After hearing this composition, it will be particularly striking to listen to the work of another composer of film music, although in this case a piece that was intended for concert performance from the start: John Williams, the composer of the wonderful music used in Jurassic Park, Harry Potter and countless other world-famous films, composed his Viola Concerto in 2009, at the age of 77. The Dane Carl August Nielsen, on the other hand, was much younger when he finished his First Symphony: he was 29 in 1894 when he completed his four-movement work, which included treatments of Danish folk motifs. The winner of numerous competitions, Kinga Wojdalska studies at London’s Royal Academy of Music.

A szabadság hangjai

Béla Bartók’s first creative period has strong ties to the world of the 19th century, especially the music of Ferenc Liszt. The symphonic poem centred around Lajos Kossuth connects to Liszt’s Hungarian Historical Portraits, or such hero-themed symphonic poems of the same programme as Mazeppa, Hamlet and Prometheus. In addition to ideas, the young Bartók also drew on the wisdom of Liszt as regarded composition technique: the motivic arrangement of Les Préludes was certainly an inspiration, so it will be particularly interesting to hear the two pieces one after the other.
The world premiere on the programme, Roland Szentpáli’s cantata, was an award winner of Müpa’s composer competition in 2020. The lyrics are based on a poem by Dániel Berzsenyi, which the composer found forceful and relevant. The piece incorporates narration and a solo voice, a solo horn, and additional horns arranged in space.

OPENING CONCERT OF THE FIRST CARPATHIAN BASIN CLASSICAL MUSIC FESTIVAL

Created to create tradition, what else could an international festival select for its opening concert than the works of a genius whose very name carries the message of God’s love? Amadeus. In 1779, after returning to Salzburg from his travels in Mannheim and Paris, the young Mozart wrote two works for two solo instruments: the Sinfonia Concertante in E flat Major (a ‘marriage’ made between symphony and concerto) for violin, viola and orchestra, and the Concerto for Two Pianos, also in E flat major. In the former, he probably meant to play the viola solo himself, while in the latter he would share the lead solos with his elder sister. The composer’s deep grief at this time (over the death of his mother and a disappointment in love) is particularly evident in the slow movement of the Sinfonia Concertante. Included to set the tone of the concert with its elevated harmonies, the Overture to the song-play The Magic Flute (1791) was also written in E-flat major, and is also interpreted as an allegory of “the human soul’s striving for inner harmony and enlightenment” (D. Koenigsberger). The Contessa’s aria in Act III of the opera buffa The Marriage of Figaro (1786) moves from disappointment and despair to the heights of rekindled love and hope. The concert is a collaboration between artists born in different parts of the Carpathian Basin, with pianist Apolka Bonnyai as artistic director.
