A concert in which everything and everyone is a discovery. Korngold’s music is hardly ever heard, even though he is an exciting composer. His suite Captain Blood is completely unknown to Hungarian music-lovers. The viola concerto by the internationally renowned composer of film music John Williams promises to be a thrilling adventure, no less so than Nielsen’s rarely performed Symphony No. 1 Another discovery will be the uniquely talented young Polish violist and the similarly youthful British conductor, who is joyfully increasing the ranks of females in her profession.
Captain Blood was actually a successful American film from 1935, with music written by Korngold, who had become a successful Hollywood film composer after emigrating from Europe. He was attempting to adapt this to the concert stage when he transformed it into a concert suite. After hearing this composition, it will be particularly striking to listen to the work of another composer of film music, although in this case a piece that was intended for concert performance from the start: John Williams, the composer of the wonderful music used in Jurassic Park, Harry Potter and countless other world-famous films, composed his Viola Concerto in 2009, at the age of 77. The Dane Carl August Nielsen, on the other hand, was much younger when he finished his First Symphony: he was 29 in 1894 when he completed his four-movement work, which included treatments of Danish folk motifs.
