Introduction

With this concert, we would like to bring an intimate, loving, true Advent atmosphere into the lives of the kind members of our audience. To be performed are some popular melodies from the Baroque to the present day, all of them evoking the Advent season.

Tchaikovsky’s The Nutcracker has become an indispensable element of the programme for Advent and Christmas concerts, and tonight you can listen to the suite.
Karolju by American composer Christopher Rouse is a tribute to the Christmas carols of the nations.  The composer evokes the spirit of the festive season by weaving together Christmas melodies.
It was during Bach‘s first Christmas in Leipzig that the first performance of his Magnificat, his largest work to date, took place. The Magnificat, with its Latin text, tells the story of the Virgin Mary as presented by the Gospel of Luke, and the work’s connection to Christmas was reinforced by the inclusion of four Christmas carols in this version of it.
