LITTLE NIGHT OF HORRORS

Here’s another one of those initiatives of the Budafok Dohnányi Orchestra that, as we strongly believe, will be creative and bringing pleasure to a great number of people. This Halloween concert is not a copy of the commercialized American folk celebration, but an attempt to evoke the ancient Celtic tradition, with music ranging from the frightening through the cathartic to the playful type.

“Basically, our approach to the scary, to death is very strange, mystical and diverse. It’s something quite ambivalent because we do enjoy consuming the culture of our fears, in any art form. We find a witch story exciting, we are actually attracted to Satan, to the diabolical. In many pieces of music, we encounter the feeling and the idea of horror, and in fact, it is usually these parts that are the most popular in a work of music. Well now, our audience is hereby invited to this kind of spooky – but actually more enjoyable than frightening – evening of music,” said Gábor Hollerung, BDO’s Music Director and conductor of the evening.

The programme is designed to provide both music fans and audiences who are less likely to attend classical music concerts with an exciting and engaging experience. The musical pieces to be played are by Musorgsky, Berlioz, Saint-Saëns, Gounod, Verdi, and there will also be excerpts from Levente Gyöngyösi’s opera-musicals, as well as various film scores and musical excerpts from the works of John Williams, Jerry Goldsmith and Webber. Light and dance elements to be composed during the performance will serve to boost the overall effect.

Musical adventures with the BDO Big Band – FROM CLASSIC HITS TO FILM MUSIC

For the first time, BDO DAY audiences can now listen to the BDO Big Band, a unique ensemble formed by members of the symphony orchestra, which is a regular performer at BDO-related events and concerts.
With today’s show, they invite us on a journey together, from reinterpreted classical tunes and film scores in big band guise to traditional big band music. In this exciting musical journey, American jazz standards will be performed by two outstanding guest vocal artists, Lilla Polyák and Bálint Gájer.

GUIDO MANCUSI QUARTET / ZEMPLÉN FESTIVAL

The chamber musical formation performing tonight is made up by some outstanding musicians of Budafok Dohnányi Orchestra and its principal guest conductor Guido Mancusi. Their repertoire ranges from the divertimento, or light music, of Mozart, the master of Viennese classicism, to Schubert’s emotional sonatinas and contemporary music – and Piazzolla’s unique paraphrase of the tango, which is a truly exhilarating piece of music.

Anyone who has been to a BDO concert will know that we are happy to select works by our principal guest conductor – as in fact, when he is not conducting from the conductor’s podium or the orchestra pit, he engages in writing music – and Guido Mancusi is a truly prolific composer. Among his dozens of works for stage and orchestra, the one to be performed tonight is a piano quartet entitled Musivische Reisen. He says that as a composer he creates dramatic works and as a conductor he is their advocate. Composers’ and conductors’ wish is to give something to people – an ideal Mancusi has been promoting for more than 30 years.

Chamber Concert by the Trüffel Quartet & Friends / Zemplén Festival

The Trüffel Quartet is made up of members of one of Hungary’s leading orchestras, the Budafok Ernő Dohnányi Symphony Orchestra. Their extremely colourful repertoire includes music of almost every style from the Baroque to the present day. They give concerts that fill the entire evening in churches, theatres and concert halls. In addition to many classical concerts, they often play as accompanists to rock, pop and alternative music bands, but also at corporate events, weddings and family celebrations.

For 15 years they have been regular performers in a special series of weekly concerts in Budapest’s famous churches (St. Stephen’s Basilica, Matthias Church, St. Anne’s Church of Upper Watertown). It was Ágnes Kószás’ idea to surprise the audience with the same programme at this year’s Zemplén Festival, in the form of an evening concert.

The double bass player of the chamber orchestra, Gyula Lázár, is also a member of the Budafok Dohnányi Orchestra, and is the principal of the bass section. Not only is he a prominent figure in the classical music scene, his versatility is also evident in the way he plays folk music, gypsy music and contemporary works. Gyula Gabora, soloist of the evening, is a member of the Hungarian National Philharmonic Orchestra. He performs as an orchestral musician, chamber musician and soloist both at home and abroad. He is a founding member and first violinist of the Nádor Quartet.

NAGY DUO / ZEMPLÉN FESTIVAL

The members of the Duo – Veronika Nagy and Szilvia Nagy – are both musicians of the Budafok Dohnányi Orchestra. They came into a deeper working relationship in connection with a theatre piece, the music for which was composed by Bence Gazda, BDO’s concertmaster. This was almost two years ago and with time the ladies started to feel they missed playing together. So that is how they came up with this concert of some light-hearted music from various genres for audience of the Zemplén Festival. Please give them a warm welcome.

BDO A’la Carte Ensemble: Milonga / Zemplén Festival

Formed in 2017 by artists of Ernő Dohnányi Symphony Orchestra, BDO A´la Carte Ensemble will come to the Rákóczi Vine-Harvest House in Tarcal with a unique instrumental line-up, transcriptions and original works. The ensemble’s name reflects the versatility of their repertoire: the audience can enjoy a varied programme just as rich as the variety of exquisite courses of the à la carte menu in an elegant yet cosy restaurant.

Complementing a string quintet formation by the clarinet, saxophone and flute, the musicians can reproduce the symphony orchestra sound as a multi-coloured chamber ensemble and imitate the full orchestral sound. The ensemble has given concerts with great success in the past years at the Zemplén Festival, at Klassz a pARTon Festival and most recently on the occasion of World Alzheimer’s Day in Budapest. The members of the ensemble are not only colleagues, but also friends – this always gives them an extra something to play together, which is also felt by the listeners.
