MOZART: MASS IN C MINOR – THE ANNIVERSARY CONCERT OF THE BUDAPEST ACADEMIC CHORAL SOCIETY

On 18 November there will be a celebration of singing together at the Liszt Academy of Music. Although the numbers aren’t exactly round – as in 2023, the Budapest Academic Choral Society is 66 years old, and the choir’s conductor, Gábor Hollerung, has been directing the amateur ensemble for 43 years – the anniversary celebrations have been cancelled due to Covid and the hard times it brought along. Current and former members of the choir will be singing together a monumental a cappella piece, Kodály’s Jesus and the Traders, which was often performed by the choir in the 1980s especially, followed by one of the most important works in the oratorio literature, Mozart’s Mass in C minor.

NEW YEAR’S CONCERT

Another New Year, another January – another frenetic New Year’s celebration with the Budafok Dohnányi Orchestra at Müpa Budapest! The sensational concert at the beginning of January is a long tradition in the life of our orchestra, and its programme is a surprise every time. Our audiences already know that it’s worth buying tickets for our unique concert as soon as possible, as the auditorium fills up months in advance. Anyone who has been to our New Year’s Eve concert before will probably want to go again, because they already know they can expect a unique musical sense of humour, virtuosity, captivating conductor’s introductions and a world-class New Year’s celebration.

CHRISTMAS ACTUALLY

This year, it is for the fifth time that we are inviting our audiences to our traditional large-scale symphony concert show. When Christmas is about to end but the tree is still up and standing, when our hearts are still full of those snug moments, when the ordinary days are not yet back – it is in that moment in time that we offer a Christmas atmosphere with symphonic music, dance, aerialists and a spectacular show. In the MVM Dome’s state-of-the-art arena, the most popular international Christmas tunes from the worlds of classical music, jazz and pop performed by the orchestra, choir and soloists will make your Christmas experience unforgettable.

LITTLE NIGHT OF HORRORS

A Halloween concert with witches, vampires and ghosts

Did you know that there’s a day of the year when the veil opens between the living and the dead, humans and magical creatures, and the worlds of reality and fantasy? This is the tradition of Halloween, an ancient holiday that we are going to celebrate with a concert for the second time. Last year, our ‘spooky’ innovation made a debut of great success, and so we’re reviving the holiday yet another time. But instead of the commercialised American way of celebrating it, we put the beliefs of the ancient Celtic tradition at the heart of our concert. Ghosts, music, goosebumps… that’s what this unusual musical programme offers, with dance and carefully composed lighting to enhance the overall effect. And the music? There will be many sorts: scary, playful, cathartic, occasionally even popular. As befits witches, vampires and ghosts…

BDO-DAY

11:00 Comprehensible Music

THE PORTRAIT OF THE HERO

Beethoven: Piano Concerto No. 5 in E-flat Major (“Emperor”)

In Beethoven’s oeuvre, the notion and character of the hero, whether it’s about Napoleon or Prometheus, plays a prominent role. Beethoven’s last and perhaps most significant piano concerto is Piano Concerto in E-flat Major, widely known in the Western world by the adjective “Emperor”, which refers primarily to Napoleon, whom Beethoven worshipped for a long time. With its monumentality, the often heroic task for the pianist and, of course, with the E-flat major tone connecting it to Beethoven’s other heroic works, the piano concerto is an organic part of this cycle of thought.

20:00 Symphonic Concert

CELEBRATION

In this concert we are celebrating our 30-year anniversary. Come join us!

The overture to the programme will be two works from 100 years ago, both written to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the unification of Pest, Buda and Óbuda (thus the birth of the city of Budapest – the tr.): Ernő Dohnányi’s Festival Overture and Bartók’s Dance Suite.

Next you can listen to a virtual symphony in four movements, selected from different periods and composers in music history: the first movement is Beethoven’s Leonore Overture No. 3, which is a display of heroism. The second movement is the 3rd movement of Brahms’ Symphony No. 3, one of the most beautiful and popular pieces in music history, which exudes emotion and love. The third movement is Birthday Scherzo composed specially for the occasion by Guido Mancusi, our orchestra’s principal guest conductor, and composer. The final movement is The Throne Room & End Title from John Williams’ music for Star Wars, bringing our festive “symphony” to a close with a sense of sublimity.

Dohnányi: Festive Overture
Bartók: Dance Suite
Beethoven: Leonore Overture No. 3
Brahms: Symphony No. 3 – Movement 3
Mancusi: Birthday Scherzo
John Williams: Star Wars – The Throne Room and End Title
