100 YEARS OF THE RHAPSODY IN BLUE – GERSHWIN NIGHT BY THE BDO CHAMBER MUSIC WORKSHOP

George Gershwin (1898-1937) is considered a very special island in the history of classical music. In 2024, it will be exactly 100 years since he composed his most famous work, the short piano concerto Rhapsody in Blue (the title of which is often mistakenly translated literally as ‘blue’ rhapsody). This masterpiece not only turned the life of the barely 26-year-old composer upside down, but the entire musical world as it was known at the time.

But where does the power of Gershwin’s music lie? What is it that makes him truly American? How did this work influence the rest of the composer’s life and what were its repercussions in music history? Are we really talking about ‘just’ symphonic jazz, or is there a much more complex content to grasp? These and many other similar questions will be answered by the chamber ensemble of the Budafok Dohnányi Orchestra, the BDO Chamber Music Workshop, in a concert where we will get familiarised with the composer’s world through the most important pieces of Gershwin’s oeuvre. The BDO Chamber Music Workshop is an ensemble formed by musical artists of Budafok Dohnányi Orchestra, which, thanks to its unique composition, is able to present each work in a new, distinctly characteristic instrumentation, thus embodying both the intimacy of the chamber music tradition and the grandiosity of the large orchestra sound.

ARANYBÁL (“Ball of the Golden Age”) – CANCELLED

We regret to inform our Audience that

the 2024 Golden Ball is cancelled.

Costs (room rental, catering) have increased to such an extent that it is impossible to organise the Ball and we are unable to set a ticket price that we would consider fair to you in the current economic climate. Six-figure ticket prices (in HUF) would not even come close to partially covering the costs.

We are working on getting the Golden Ball back for next year.

LET THE NATION SING – HÄNDEL: ISRAEL IN EGYPT

Every year, hundreds of choir singers from all over the country and even beyond our borders gather to sing some of the most significant works of music literature under the direction of Gábor Hollerung, after months of preparation and an intensive rehearsal weekend together. This initiative is driven by a passion for singing, which is so important in the life of amateur choirs that it was even possible to make it happen during the pandemic. This year, Handel’s grand oratorio, Israel in Egypt will be performed.

George Frederick Handel wrote his biblical oratorio Israel in Egypt in the autumn of 1738, with biblical texts that were selected and composed by the librettist of the Messiah, Charles Jennens. He wrote the piece at his own pace and completed it in a month. Its première was the highlight of the following season, along with Saul, but unlike its counterpart, it was not a great success with the English audiences of the time, probably because of the predominance of choral parts. In the 19th century, however, Handel’s work became extremely popular, and, as historians have noted, then it was precisely because of the significant role played by the chorus. In this work, unique of its kind, Handel achieves the epitome of the choral oratorio: nineteen choral movements, with only four arias and three duets – it is not by chance, therefore, that is it called a ‘choral epic’. This large-scale composition, setting the exodus of the chosen people from Egypt to music, depicts the ten plagues with unparalleled ingenuity, and creates an impressive arc from the first part, the mourning of Joseph, to the third, the joy of the Jews upon their deliverance and their song of thanksgiving to the Lord. Our concert will feature the second and third parts of the work.

Adrien Szekeres and Boldizsár László in a symphonic concert première

In 2024, Adrien Szekeres and Boldizsár László will present a brand new concert material collected under the title La Voce Vita, for which our orchestra will provide the symphonic framework. The greatest duets of the last century, from Puccini through Andrea Bocelli to Freddie Mercury, will be performed in the course of one evening at the Erkel Theatre.

The two singers will be performing the songs in their original orchestrations, yet in a unique sound in Hungary under the musical direction of Liszt Ferenc Prize and Prima Primissima Audience Award-winning conductor Gábor Hollerung.

GEMS OF GERMAN ROMANTICISM 2. 0

On this occasion, just like in our concert two years ago, another few gems of German romanticism will be performed in the Pesti Vigadó. The programme of the evening has been deliberately structured to gradually deepen the musical experience, from the unaccompanied motet to the more grandiose, apparatus-enriched works. The peak of the programme will be Mendelssohn’s Psalm 42, which is rarely heard in Hungary and is clearly one of the master’s most significant works. The programme presents the gems of German Romanticism as a coherent whole, demonstrating how their sophistication and emotional richness give eternal value to these masterpieces.

Müpa Maraton: Északi romantika

A Müpa és a Budapesti Fesztiválzenekar 2008 óta minden évben megrendezett maratonjai az esetek többségében egy-egy zeneszerző munkásságának legjavát mutatták be egymást követő hangversenyek sorával, délelőttől egészen késő estig a Bartók Béla Nemzeti Hangversenyteremben és a Fesztivál Színházban. Bachtól Brahmson és Bartókon át Bernsteinig számos kiemelkedő komponista volt már e napok főszereplője – Beethoven például kétszer is -, a 2024-es maraton azonban skandináv mesterek előtt tiszteleg, és a gyakran zord jelzővel illetett, pedig csodálatos tájakban és természeti kincsekben gazdag Észak-Európába invitálja a közönséget. A késő romantikus északi komponisták – így a norvég Grieg, a dán Nielsen és a finn Sibelius – szülőföldjük szépségeit, néphagyományaikat, ősi hiedelemvilágukat egyaránt hirdetik remekbe szabott kompozícióikkal, melyek közül jó néhánnyal találkozhat az, aki ellátogat február 4-én a Müpába.

A maratonon a BDZ is évek óta közreműködödik, idén 17 órai kezdettel szólaltatja meg Nielsen Aladdin-szvitjét és Grieg Peer Gynt-jének kísérőzenéjét.
