CHRISTMAS ACTUALLY – A SYMPHONIC CONCERT SHOW

No Christmas without BDO

Christmas Actually: a festive experience for the whole family!

Tickets are now on sale for the most magical Christmas concert of the year. On 28 December, Budafok Dohnányi Orchestra will perform a major Christmas concert at the MVM Dome, featuring a selection of the most popular international Christmas tunes from the worlds of classical music, jazz and pop, dedicated to all those who want to add to the festive atmosphere and the magic of the holidays with the joy of music.

Budafok Dohnányi Orchestra‘s large-scale Christmas event made its debut in 2018 and has enchanted audiences every year since. Christmas Actually is not just a traditional concert, but a spectacular show where Christmas classics are brought to life in a symphonic orchestral performance with breathtaking visuals and sound.  Led by conductor Gábor Hollerung, the concert is a unique performance featuring outstanding musicians, which is made even more unforgettable by aerialists, dancers and a 150-strong choir.

The star guests of Christmas Actually are fixed stars of their musical genres, respectively: Bea Palya, one of the best known figures of Hungarian folk music and modern world music, and Krisztián Oláh, a pianist on the borderline between jazz and classical music, who is known as one of the most talented representatives of the young generation whose artistic sensitivity and extraordinary technical skills are captivating to audiences. Finally, Swing à la Django is a prominent representative of the swing and manouche (gypsy jazz) genres, and has become a festival and concert favourite for their energetic performances and instrumental virtuosity.

‘Pozsonyi Picnic’

This year Budafok Dohnányi Orchestra will join the ‘Pozsonyi Picnic’.

We are going to give a taste of film music at 16:45h on the Jászai Main Stage, and you should also visit the BDO tent, where we will be offering quizzes, discounted concert tickets and prize draws

LITTLE NIGHT OF HORRORS

Did you know that there’s a day of the year when the passageway between the living and the dead, humans and magical creatures, and the worlds of reality and fantasy opens up? This is the tradition of Halloween, an ancient holiday that we are going to celebrate for the third time with a concert. Our debut was a great success two years ago, whereby Budafok Dohnányi Orchestra also introduced a “terrifying” re-enactment of the holiday. But instead of the commercialised American ways, the beliefs of the ancient Celtic tradition will be placed at the heart of the concert. Ghosts, music, goosebumps… that’s what this unusual concert offers, with dance and carefully composed lighting to enhance the overall effect. And what about the music? There will be many sorts: scary, playful, cathartic, occasionally even popular. As befits witches, vampires and ghosts…

Play and Soul – BDO Chamber Music Workshop – ZEMPLÉN FESTIVAL

The BDO Chamber Music Workshop is a chamber ensemble of the Budafok Dohnányi Orchestra, which presents masterpieces of music literature in an unusual line-up, in excellent, symphonic and virtuoso arrangements. Today’s concert combines two elements that rarely go hand in hand: playfulness and religious content. Schubert’s string quartet is play itself. The inner dynamics of the soul are expressed in Kol Nidrei and in the Shostakovich piece. Kol Nidrei is an adaptation of the melody of one of the oldest Jewish prayers, while Shostakovich’s Trio in E minor is a musical depiction of the composer’s grief over the death of a dear friend. And Gershwin’s suite from his opera Porgy and Bess is a synthesis of play and the religious soul, with its combination of religious gospel and playful virtuosity.

Wake Up! BDO A la cARTe – ZEMPLÉN FESTIVAL

The unique instrumental ensemble BDO A la cARTe is a returning performer at the Zemplén Festival. For this year’s concert, they come with catchy tunes and transcriptions that will surely please the audience. Formed in 2017 by BDO musicians, the name of the group is a reflection of the versatility of their repertoire: the audience can enjoy a varied programme in an elegant yet convivial restaurant where they can choose from an a la carte menu of the best dishes. The string quintet complemented with the clarinet, saxophone, flute and piccolo has given concerts at the Zemplén Festival, at Klassz a pARTon Festival, at the World Alzheimer’s Day in Budapest and on the World Music Day. The members of BDO A la cARTe are not only colleagues, but also friends – this always gives them an extra something to play together, which is also felt by the listeners.

From Baroque to Film Music Trüffel Quartet – ZEMPLÉN FESTIVAL

Founded in 2015, Trüffel Quartet is made up of members of one of Hungary’s leading orchestras, the Budafok Ernő Dohnányi Symphony Orchestra. Their extremely colourful repertoire includes music of almost every style from the Baroque to the present day. They give concerts that fill the entire evening in churches, theatres and concert halls. In addition to many classical concerts, they often play as accompanists to rock, pop and alternative music bands, but also at corporate events, weddings and family celebrations. They usually custom-make their programme according to demand, with their performed pieces varying from classical music to musicals and film music.

In the Clouds – Anna Fellegi & Orchestra – ZEMPLÉN FESTIVAL

Anna Fellegi is a member of the violin section of the Budafok Dohnányi Orchestra, but she also performs regularly with the orchestra as a singer, on prestigious occasions and venues such as the Arena, the MVM Dome and Müpa Budapest. A year ago, she started her own solo project: she wrote her own songs with the help of her husband Attila Fábián, co-writer, Szabolcs Harmath sound engineer and music producer and lyricist Gergő Markos.

As for the genre, it is popular music, which is clear, deep and sophisticated – she plays and sings these songs in her show, along with Hungarian and foreign covers. Anna’s show is entitled “In the Clouds”, which is a pun on her family name translating to “the one of/from the clouds”, so:

Dear Ladies and Gentlemen, fasten your seat belts, we’re starting our ascent to and above the clouds…

The programme is free of charge.
