Introduction

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s two-act Don Giovanni was premièred in Prague more than 220 years ago, but the Don Juan theme itself had been on the agenda for a good four centuries, with dozens of writers attempting to adapt it. But the most enduring, and of all, the most outstanding version is that of Lorenzo Da Ponte’s libretto and Mozart’s music. Although the original storyline is full of unexpected twists and turns, András Hábetler, the director of this staged production, has twisted the story a little further, setting the opera in the decadent world of the 1920s. And if the world of Don Giovanni, rich in unscrupulousness, lies and deceit, wasn’t enough for some, there is more eyewash to be seen: Anikó Ungár’s magic tricks will surely add some colour to the performance. The excellent soloists and the Budafok Dohnányi Orchestra will be conducted by Guido Mancusi.
